Mind the gap! Labour and Sir Keir Starmer hit record high leads in latest poll

Labour hit a record-breaking 27-point lead over the Conservatives, while Sir Keir Starmer saw his biggest-ever lead over Rishi Sunak as the nation’s preferred Prime Minister in the latest Omnisis poll.

Starmer’s Labour gained three points to reach 51% in the pollster’s latest voter intention tracker, as the Tories dropped three points and now sit on 24%.

Meanwhile, 41% of voters think Sir Keir Starmer would make the best Prime Minister compared to just 27% who prefer Rishi Sunak - a 14-point difference. 

Anti-monarchy protest arrests

During the King’s coronation, more than 50 peaceful, anti-monarchy protesters were arrested. We asked people what they thought, with 51% saying the police were correct to make the arrests and 36% saying they were wrong. 14% didn’t know.

Interestingly, when subsequently asked if people agreed or disagreed that the right to protest was a fundamental human right, 72% agreed and only 15% disagreed. 12% didn’t know.

Illegal Migration Bill – is it ethical and will it work?

The Illegal Migration Bill was in the House of Lords this week so Omnisis asked a few questions to gauge the public’s view of the legislation.

First up, we asked if people agreed or disagreed that the Bill was the will of the people. 

  • 47% agreed
  • 31% neither
  • 22% disagreed

Next, we asked if people agreed or disagreed that the Bill would stop small boat crossings:

  • 37% agreed
  • 26% neither
  • 37% disagreed

We also asked if people agreed or disagreed that the Bill was ethical…

  • 46% agreed
  • 29% neither
  • 25% disagreed

And finally, we asked if people agreed or disagreed that the Bill made them proud to be British:

  • 34% agreed
  • 35% neither
  • 31% disagreed

Should rail be nationalised?

As the government stepped in to take over the running of the TransPennine Express, Omnisis asked how people felt about ownership of services.

45% of people said that all rail should be nationalised, with 21% saying rail should come under part-private and part-public ownership. 11% didn’t know.

This week’s poll which was conducted on 11th – 12th May 2023, questioned 1,355 people and is weighted to a national representative population.
